Purpose of Role
The National Director, Practice Management – Disputes Commercial & Construction (NDPM) will be expected to provide high quality management support, both strategically and operationally, to the Group Head (GH), National Business Leaders (NBLs) and Regional Group Managers (RGMs) in the fulfillment of their practice-related strategic and leadership goals. This position provides strategic insight, business perspectives and execution support for both the long-range strategic plan and the day-to-day execution of the annual business plans, with a view to optimizing group performance and improving efficiency and effectiveness of all business enablement processes.
Acting as an integration and communications hub between practice leadership and the various business service functions of the Firm, the NDPM helps to maintain momentum and traction on critical infrastructure and practice development projects while ensuring that the practice leadership can focus more effectively on revenue generation and client relationship activities.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the role are:
Support the Group Head in managing the Group
Act as a trusted advisor to the Group Head.
Liaise with legal professionals and Group leadership functions on the GH’s behalf.
Preparation for, and facilitation of “critical path” GH meetings (e.g. with BLG’s management team, Partnership Board or National Business Leaders).
Proactive identification and resolution/escalation of issues that could impact the successful execution of the GH’s commitments
Engage in root cause analysis without prompting from the GH or others on issues and opportunities that could impact the BLG national practice strategy.
Confirm hypotheses through tactful and discrete engagement with the relevant parties.
Succinctly update the GH on the issues, supported with facts and recommendations.
Coordination/orchestration of commitments directly involving the GH.
Develop material for GH related to meetings, including powerpoints and speaking notes.
Monitor and follow-up on progress/achievement of next steps.
Free up Practice leadership to focus on revenue generation and client activities.
Collaborate with regional and national leadership of the Practice Groups, the National Directors of Talent Advisory (NDTA) and other NDPMs to ensure alignment across the Group and the Firm
Work collaboratively with Business Services functions with respect to day-to-day operations and Firm-wide initiatives within PGs
Support the Group Head in implementing Practice Group initiatives
Coordination/orchestration of projects directly involving the GH
Work with other NDPMs to form a consistent approach and understanding of activities and initiatives across the Firm to ensure alignment and that opportunities are identified for collaboration and coordination across the Groups to avoid silos being formed
Work with national practice groups and Disputes leaders to align their actions and communications in support of agreed upon Firm and department goals
Work closely with and coordinate projects with the Project Management Team and other Business Services Leaders leading the project
Ensure alignment among the practice groups and any other project teams in which the GH is involved
Understand the views of different stakeholders, update the GH and recommend mitigating approaches
Ensure coordination and alignment with the Disputes practice groups in an effort to avoid silos and ensure coordination amongst the Disputes Department and across the Firm
Support consistent implementation of national standards, processes, initiatives
Support national adoption of modern legal service delivery
Encourage adoption of innovation, change management and best practices across the Group
Provide independent leadership of special GH-initiated projects
Duties range from drafting products to be authored by the GH, to convening thought leaders on various topics
Scope, plan and execute multiple, often quick-turnaround projects with minimal outside assistance
Present ideas for special projects that might facilitate the GH’s/leadership’s objectives
Work with appropriate stakeholders, including outside parties, to undertake analysis
Present findings to the GH, and national practice groups as appropriate
Independent leadership of special GH initiated projects:
Duties ranging from drafting products to be authored by the GH, to convening thought leaders on various topics.
Scope, plan and execute multiple, often quick-turnaround projects with minimal outside assistance.
Present ideas for special projects that might facilitate the GH’s/leadership’s objectives.
Financial Performance Management:
Support the GH in driving financial performance across the NPGs by managing and overseeing the following key areas:
Budgeting and Forecasting
Capacity, Headcount and FTE monitoring
